The Wisdom Tooth Process
There are two approaches when it comes to wisdom tooth extraction – simple and surgical.
If the tooth has erupted through the gumline and is visible to some degree, Dr. White will anesthetize the area before elevating the tooth using the proper instruments. He will then move the tooth back and forth until it loosens and detaches.
If the tooth is not visible but instead sits beneath the gumline (impacted), a surgical procedure will be required. Dr. White will anesthetize the tooth and surrounding area before making an incision in the gums to expose the wisdom tooth. To avoid causing any damage to the bone, he may choose to separate the tooth into smaller pieces so he can remove it little by little for a more comfortable procedure.
The gum tissue will then be closed before gauze is applied to minimize the bleeding. A blood clot will need to form over each surgical site so that proper healing can occur.
